Mobile Phone Reviews – LG Renoir (KC-910)

Looking for a robust mobile phone that will outlast oblivious abuse by it’s owners? Seems the LG Renoir can take it rough. It seems to be the upgrade from my LG KU990, which I’m still enjoying apart from the fact that it has some limitations (with new tech seemingly around the corner at all times). 5 Megapixels on the KU-990 is replaced with 8 megapixels and some trick functionality on the photography, sound (no Dolby branded) and GPS side.

Wish I could upgrade now! GPS functionality makes a huge difference as I’ve tried it out recently on a friend’s Samsung Omnia (with add-on Garmin GPS).

It seems everybody is jumping on the Widgets bandwagon, it’ll be interesting to see how LG opens up development for widgets so that LG users can also have access to the interesting types of apps that the iPhone developers community has come up with…

LG Chocolate White Screen

For the past 2 weeks my LG Chocolate phone has started giving me trouble in that the screen goes white when I open it up. Everything else works, it just seems to lose the connection to the screen or something. Obviously this is extremely frustrating and I’m looking for a software upgrade since my service provider said something about a software problem. Could it be because of a software bug, or is it a mechanical failure? If anyone knows anything about it, please comment over here!! Would love to solve this mystery!

LG KG800 follow-up

I’ve had the phone now for a few weeks and have noticed a few things. The battery life is not good at all. I get 2 days max out of it. Maybe because there are so many cool features on it that use power!! Further I’ve started noticing that when I’m on the phone with someone it sometimes mutes the other person so I can’t hear what they’re saying. All in all still happy with the phone and have gotten some good compliments. That’s what funky cell phones are about right? A fashion accessory…

How to transfer music to your LG KG800

Ok, so I’d figured it out. MP3, WMA etc files are to be loaded into the music folder and MIDI, MMF etc are to be loaded into the ‘other’ folder for access on the cell phone. All these sound files can be loaded as ringtones but you can’t change the message tone, which is still incomprehensible, but anyway… I can’t browse the cell phone through bluetooth in windows explorer, but I could ‘send a file’ to the phone with my onboard bluetooth functionality, which automatically puts the file in the right directory on the cell phone, which is pretty nice. I also successfully transferred some JPG files to the phone and you can also set them as wallpapers. Nice…

LG KG800 Chocolate

At last, the long awaited upgrade for my cell phone. I decided on the LG KG800 for the simple reason that it’s so damn sexy and packs a mean punch.

First impression was the slim design, it fits really nicely into my pockets. The MP3 ringtones are just bliss and I’ve already loaded a whole bunch of custom ringtones I made myself. Funnily enough I thought I could load WAV files, but I think I’m getting the format wrong, because the phone doesn’t see them.

Functionality is quite simple with some nice shortcuts. I didn’t like the touch keys (yes, heat sensitive touch keys!) switching off so fast, so I upped the delay. I guess it takes some getting used to.

The LG KG800 has some excellent video (3GP) and camera (up to 1280 x 960 pixels) quality. I look forward to playing with that in future. It also has a voice memo recorder, MP3 player (with stereo headphones), link software with a data cable and much more. The nice thing is that with Windows XP you just plug it in and then you can see the phone as a storage device, enabling you to load almost anything on the cell phone. I’m not sure why it has a text folder, I guess you could load some text files on there if you’d like to do some reading, or made some notes for yourself…

You could also load some animated gifs as screensavers, which is pretty cool, plus associate 72×72 px pics with callers in your phonebook. The sound quality and ringtone volume is good, allthough allot of bass on loud ringtones tends to distort the loudspeaker. Speaking of which, I hoped that the phone would have an ‘in-call’ loudspeaker facility, but it seems not to have that function, which is a bummer. I can live without it though.

On the disk that comes with the phone there are lots more images and ringtones to load on the cell phone. I could however not get the phone connected through the software. I’ll keep on trying and see what works…

It comes standard with 128mb of memory, pretty nice for loading tones and taking video and pictures.

Cons: The only problem I have with the phone is the fact that the top keys on the keypad is close to the slider which makes typing text/sms a drag, but I guess it’s also something to get used to since I’ve only used it for a few hours…
