Nokia AMR ringtone tutorial 1/3

Sunday, April 9th, 2006

The Nokia AMR ringtone format has evolved since the new multimedia driven phones have hit the market. AMR stands for “Adaptive Multi-Rate“. There are two versions of AMR ringtones. One is called AMR and the other is called AMR-WB, which stands for “Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband“. The wideband ringtones are of higher quality (16kHz as apposed to 8kHz).

RNG - Nokia Ringtone Format

Wednesday, March 1st, 2006

I’ve done a bit of research into the .rng ringtone format. It’s a proprietory ringtone format used on certain Nokia mobile phones. It’s midi based, so I guess there’s no realtone / voicetone functionality within the format, allthough I still want to confirm that. Since Nokia has AMR realtones that was my logical deduction.

Most popular ringtone formats

An open question to my fellow ringtone producers around the world. What would you say is the most popular ringtone format except for the obvious MP3 and midi? A close guess would be Nokia’s AMR ringtone format since they’ve got such a big market share.

AMR ringtones are realtones (truetones, voice tones), which means it’s not a midi based sound, but rather a WAV type sound, so it can be any sound effect or real song. I’d like to find out how to enable vibration and LED’s when producing AMR ringtones. Same for MMF realtones. It’s been bugging me for a while.

I’m thinking about doing a ringtone glossary. That would come in quite handy. Also look out for my ringtone tutorials which should be published over the next 6 months. Bookmark this website NOW by pressing CTRL-D. You can also subscribe to the RSS feed, listed at the bottom of this page.
